Murangi Field School space
Murangi Farm Field School, an initiative of the Rural Development Inter-Diocesan Service (RDIS), is making remarkable strides in sustainable farming and environmental conservation in the Western part of Rwanda. Situated in Rusizi Diocese, within Rusizi District, this growing farm field school is dedicated to transforming agricultural practices while safeguarding the ecosystem. It embraces a diverse agricultural model, integrating piggery, cattle rearing, and crop farming.
The farm produces a variety of vegetables, cereals, and avocados, providing food security and income opportunities for the local community. Through its field school approach, it serves as a learning hub for best practices in farming, offering training and capacity-building programs for local farmers. In addition to traditional farming, Murangi Farm Field School has taken steps toward sustainable innovations. The farm initiated a biomass project to promote eco-friendly energy solutions and reduce environmental degradation. However, this project is currently not operational and requires stakeholders' support for revitalization to ensure it meets its original goals. Another key development is the greenhouse project, which is currently under construction and undergoing maintenance to enhance its sustainability and long-term viability. This project aims to improve farming efficiency and protect crops against adverse climatic conditions.
With an expansive area dedicated to farming, the project continues to grow while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental conservation. A dedicated farm manager oversees daily operations, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and adherence to sustainable farming principles. Their role is crucial in safeguarding the farm’s success and ensuring the smooth implementation of various projects. Murangi Farm Field School envisions continuous growth in every area of concern, focusing on enhancing agricultural productivity, livestock management, and ecological conservation. Through the adoption of innovative and sustainable practices, it aims to serve as a model farm contributing significantly to food security and economic development in Rwanda. To achieve these goals, the project is actively seeking partners and stakeholders to support its development and expansion, ensuring long-term sustainability and greater impact.
As the project advances under the leadership of RDIS, it remains a pillar of sustainable agriculture, community development, and environmental responsibility. With ongoing expansion and investment in modern farming techniques, the farm is set to make a lasting impact on the region’s agricultural landscape.
